SCM ( A Holistic View) ... A special trip or just a weekend break?

Optimizing a supply chain is a fascinating subject , so it 's like a very special trip , here's an analogy.

Let's start by recognizing that a very special trip is one that has been carefully planned , every detail has been carefully so that the ride is a pleasure and at the end it only concerns restarting another trip even better .

Therefore, would not get on very attractive half trip to try to enjoy it , thinking I missed it, that does not take into account for the next half of the trip ? , Who 's next? or where am I going? .

Similarly try to optimize a supply chain without knowing if I have is precisely what I have or function I should optimize only be put implement solutions or strategies or implement tools that good or do not meet my needs or made me attract a disproportionate investment by taking only reviews of references in the market.

The word holistic (integral ) originates from the Greek word " holos " meaning watching something from the functional point of view from all parts and interrelate with each other as a whole. It is a functional , not static , whole and undivided inclusive and not exclusive , expanded and not limited , including no isolated model.

From this description is that the main recommendation before considering an optimization of the supply chain , is a holistic review of the same , from the origin of its strategic objectives , financial and operational , to an assessment of their strengths and weaknesses in each of its business processes. It is very important to " take a picture of what the current status of each process " to define the scope , setting goals , identify indicators of control, etc. .

When this stage has been carried out , it must conduct an evaluation of the strategies to be implemented according to the requirements of the market ( customers ) with the sole purpose of meeting those needs. Very probably find that a process is not enough supply to meet those needs and that is where must return to the start of the main objectives questioned to rule or certify that these objectives are correct and then you need to implement one or more brands supply to meet the expectations of all customers .

Once the analysis of the scope of my project, I need to go into a more detailed integration process ( holistic view ) level, where will I take into account both the various areas of the company , as the characteristics of the market , through the strengths and weaknesses of my business partners (suppliers ) to customers of my clients. This process is many times the most critical , as it is necessary to create empathy in each integral to the effort to align the actions to be effective. To ensure the success of this phase is necessary to have well identified the benefits that such an alignment will for all members (effort - profit).

So far we have only seen the process of analysis, design and alignment of the processes involved in the supply chain . If during these phases the development has been supported and smooth by the members , I'm sure that if you have taken the measurement of indicators of control, and we should have begun to enjoy the benefits of optimizing the supply chain and that referring to the analogy of the journey, " without even never have embarked ."

When we have had a clear vision of where we're going , is the most attractive travel, defining , as I travel? , I want a thrill ride ? , I save myself the most and place in only what I like ? or want to carpool with people I value more ? These questions may seem only for a trip, but the truth is that they have to do with the type of strategies that I will have to implement in order to safely return home to start planning a new trip directions .

Implement strategies can range from the most daring and implement a just in time , VMI , etc. . to make small adjustments to my business processes without allowing me to maintain a level of investment ad - hoc to the requirements of my customers. They can be as ambitious as implement a next generation ERP , a CRM that allows me to be more in touch with the market or simply make the necessary investments for your company to move forward with a better cash flow and a decent profitability.

The answer lies in the vision, how high you want the barrier to entry for competitors and when? , Remember that the market is currently in a process of continuous change and to continue it is necessary to be updated creating differentiators in the same .

What it means to go home and redefine the new destination for our trip. Just remember that if you change the destination in the trip, it better be with a travel plan well structured and otherwise can be found on a desert island when you least expect .

Up to you if you just want a pleasant trip to be repeated with different destinations but the same excellent results , or just spending a weekend break to return to the ordinary problems awaiting the new weekend .

Remember " If you know the parameters that affect the availability of their products , you can optimize your supply chain .. "
